Modern Adaptations I'd Like to See

So recently I read Tash Hearts Tolstoy (great book btw, review here) which is a young adult novel about a teen named Tash who writes and produces a low-budget web series called Unhappy Families with her friends. Unhappy Families is a modern adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina with a teen cast and I loved the idea of modernizing classic lit stories so much that I've put together a list of just a few classic works I wouldn't mind seeing modern-set screen adaptations of.

1. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Arguably Wilde's most well-known work, Dorian Gray has been adapted several times over but the adaptations are always set in the same time period as the story. Quite a few of the taboo topics mentioned in the story are seen as *slightly* less serious today so I think it would be cool to see Dorian in the modern world indulging in everything that we consider now to be too wild. Also imagining what his parties would be like today have me really hoping this is adapted sometime in my lifetime.

2. A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare

I'll admit I've only ever read three Shakespearean plays so far. But. This has become one of my favorite classics, it was just that damn good. Unlike some of the other classics on this list, A Midsummer Night's Dream does actually have a very loosely based modern adaptation called Get Over It, a 2001 teen comedy (pretty good movie) but it barely follows the play's storyline and the characters in the movie aren't wholly inspired by the characters from the play.  I really loved the idea of this story in a high school setting.

3. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

*I understand this is more of a 'modern classic' but still including it* This one also has a few adaptations, but again, nothing with a modern day setting. Though unspoken, it's fairly clear that Lennie suffers from some form of limited mental ability and as much time as has passed since the publication of this novella, mental disability still has a stigma not too different from what it was then. I think it would make a great modern day adaptation and I'd like to see how Lennie's disabilities would be portrayed today.

4. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

*Another 'modern classic' but so what* Overall this story is still so relevant today since surprise surprise racism is still a huge thing despite however many people claim we live in a post-racial society. Though one of the points of this book is to represent how this case would be handled during one of the U.S's less than ideal time periods, I think it would be interesting to see an adaptation where the case is held today and how different or not so different things would end. Also, I wouldn't mind an adaptation that ditches the white-savior trope and better fleshes out the black characters crucial to the novel.

5. The Theban Plays by Sophocles

*Classical not classic* As is expected of a Greek drama, these plays are dramatic as hell and I loved every minute of it. As far as I know, there aren't very many screen adaptations of these plays so this super twisted storyline in a modern setting would be pretty nifty. And although Antigone is seen as an early feminist figure, there are a few areas where she fails to represent that. I think an adaptation where her role as a feminist icon is explored more and expanded upon would be welcomed.

✸ So there are some adaptations I want to see. If you have any favorite classics that you want to see adaptions of, modern or not, comment below what they are.
