Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I read this in 2015 when I was deeeeeep in a dystopian/fantasy phase. At the time, I thought it was the best thing I'd ever come across, though I'll be honest I may have let the hype for this one get to me. What I find so interesting about this one specifically is that I could not put this down once I picked it up, but in the almost three years since I read this, I still haven't continued with the series. I think I rated this 5 stars when I read it, but since then my opinion has changed so much so that now it's probably only a 3 star read for me. I have continuously told myself I will read the sequel eventually, but as time has gone on, my desire to continue reading the series has decreased. And I know I'd have to reread this in order to know what's happening if I continue with the sequel, which I don't really want to do.
Splintered by A.G Howard
I had picked this up one night with the intention of only reading a chapter or two before bed, next thing I know, the sun is coming up. This one I did end up finishing the series. After I finished Splintered, I bought the other two books in the trilogy and read them both in the same week as soon as I got them. To this day, the Splintered trilogy is one of my favorite stories and one that I'll probably never stop recommending to others.
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
An Ember in the Ashes seemed so interesting and unique when I started reading it, that I found I could not put it down until I had finished it. The only problem with this though is that this story is set in such a richly imagined world, that because I read it in one sitting, I quickly forgot a lot of the world building. Over time, even the basic plot of this and things like characters' names and backstories have faded from memory. I know I really loved this when I had read it, so it sucks that I can't even remember why. I definitely plan to reread this before continuing with the series so I can have the beginning of the story fresh in my mind.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
This one and the next book on this list I didn't actually read cover to cover, but both were read in one day so it counts. This was pretty easy to read in one day as it's a little over 200 pages. I wanted to read this for a 24hr readathon and because the movie adaptation is coming. I know it's part of a series, and while I liked this fine, I don't think I'll continue with the other books. This book just didn't seem to impact me as much as it has others and I actually found it hard to understand the hype surrounding this book.
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Another fairly short book, this I really only picked up because of the hype surrounding the film adaptation. I enjoyed parts of this, but overall it seemed like there was a point to it that I was just missing. Going into this I had no idea what it was about, just that it was supposed to be strange and sad. I would say it did live up to those expectations, just not in the way I was hoping it would have.
